In this one-act play we are first introduced to the Valet, which accompanies the three doomed souls to their designated room in Hell. The room has no windows, mirrors and only one door. We are first introduced to Joseph Garcin, a journalist from Rio de Janeiro and a war deserter, next Ines Serrano a lesbian who destroyed her lover’s marriage, and finally Estelle Rigault a socialite whom it is revealed has murdered her own child. The three soon discover that the room is not a holding cell until the torture begins, rather being confined to the room and each other is the torture. There is a moment when the door is opened and the character’s can seemingly leave, yet they choose instead to continue pleading their cases for one another in hopes of redemption.
